Roseville’s Story claims fifth at state
Roseville Area High School senior Trae Story closed out his prep wrestling career last weekend by competing in the state tournament. In his final trip to state, Story finished fifth.
The fifth-place finish was good enough to earn him another trip to the medal stand although he wasn’t able to climb as high up this time around. Last year as a junior, Story was the state runner-up.
Story competed in the Class AAA 195-pound bracket, one of the deeper ones in the state. Ten of the 16 entries finished their seasons with at least 30 victories and three of them topped the 40-win plateau.
Story (42-2) beat a pair of 30-win wrestlers in the first two rounds as he pinned Cambridge-Isanti’s Kyle Chromy (31-15) midway through the second period in the first round and outpointed Prior Lake’s Alex Hart (35-5) 7-2 in the quarterfinals.
The depth of the weight class caught up with Story in the semifinals as he dropped a 6-4 decision to Moorhead’s Chase Morlock (42-2). Morlock was the Class AAA state champion at 182 pounds in 2012.
Story also lost in the next round, the third-place semifinals, as Justice Davis (43-5) of Centennial beat him 5-3 in overtime.
Down to the last match of RAHS wrestling career, Story snapped his mini-losing streak by pinning Hastings’ Daryale Harris (26-16) 1:32 into the second period in the fifth-place final.
