Sheriff’s office announces new emergency coordinator

Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows announced last week the selection of Dan Carlson as the new emergency preparedness coordinator for Dakota County. The former director, Dave Gisch, recently retired after 29 years of service.

A release from Bellows office praised Carlson for bringing a wide range of experience to the county with a career in emergency management and public safety spanning over 33 years. Carlson became a member of the Burnsville Police Department in 1986, with assignments in patrol and community resources; he also served as Burnsville’s emergency management coordinator before leaving in 2010.

Since 2010, Carlson has worked as a private Homeland Security consultant, specializing in emergency planning and exercise planning. Dan has his Emergency Management Certificate with the State of Minnesota and holds a master’s degree in police administration and education from the University of St. Thomas, as well as an undergraduate degree in public safety administration from National American University. Carlson will begin his work in the Sheriff’s Office on March 18.
