The Mounds View High School boys cross country team turned in its best finish at a state meet in more than 10 years on Saturday.

The Mustangs, making their third consecutive appearance in the Class AA state meet, finished sixth out of 16 teams. It was the highest finish for a Mounds View boys team since a second-place performance in 1999.

Mounds View wound up with 217 points, nine fewer than seventh-place Bemidji and 19 more than fifth-place Hutchinson.

The Mustangs were led in the meet by a trio of seniors. Michael Hoff, the first Mustang to cross the finish line, placed 47th overall. Andre Hessini and Tony Duchenes were next in 80th and 88th place, respectively.

Junior Matt Anderson finished 108th and senior George Henson crossed the finish line in 112th place. Sophomore Alex Plasencia (137th) and Ryan Plasencia (148th) also ran in the meet for Mounds View.

Wayzata won the team title with 53 points, seven better than runner-up Edina. Third-place Stillwater was the highest-finishing team from the Suburban East Conference. Wayzata also captured the individual state title as junior Connor Olson topped the field.

Also competing at state was St. Anthony Village junior Nick Lawson. Running in his first state meet, Lawson finished 58th overall.

Two girls from Bulletin-area high schools ran in Saturday’s race.

Mounds View freshman Riley McGinnity finished 40th overall while St. Anthony Village senior Melissa Marsh wound up 107th.

Wayzata won the Class AA state team title with 37 points, 97 points ahead of runner-up East Ridge. Wayzata’s top five runners were 18th or better and even its sixth and seventh runners were in the top 20.

The individual title went to Alexandria sophomore Bethany Hasz, who beat out twin sister Megan for the championship.
