Mustangs run into surging Irish
The Mounds View High School football team has been to the section final in seven consecutive years. The Mustangs haven’t won all of those games but they’ve usually been competitive. That wasn’t the case last week, however.
Mounds View couldn’t keep up with Rosemount in the Class 6A playoffs on Friday. The Irish scored six touchdowns while holding the Mustangs to 99 yards of offense in their 42-7 victory.
Through most of the first quarter, the game looked like it would be a defensive struggle but then Rosemount exploded. The Irish scored twice in the final 75 seconds of the first quarter. Rosemount (9-1) added three more scores in the second quarter and had its trip to the state tournament wrapped up by halftime. Mounds View (7-3) broke through for its only points of the game midway through the fourth quarter when Joe Fredrickson hit Ryan Kaczynski for a 4-yard touchdown pass.
The loss ends Mounds View’s season short of the state tournament for the third straight year. The Mustangs’ last trip to state came in 2010.
Mounds View’s loss was one of three suffered by Suburban East Conference teams on Friday. Top-seeded East Ridge lost 38-3 to Eastview and third-seeded Cretin-Derham Hall dropped a 14-12 decision to Lakeville North.
Roseville’s 39-15 drubbing of Lakeville South on Friday gave the Suburban East its only victory in the crossover round of the two years of the Class 6A playoffs.
Rosemount drew the No. 3 seed in the Class 6A tournament and plays unseeded Eastview (6-4) on Thursday at 5 p.m. at TCF Bank Stadium. The second game on Thursday at TCF Bank pits second-seeded Maple Grove (10-0) against Roseville (8-2).
On Friday, the games shift to the Metrodome, which plays host to top-seeded Eden Prairie (9-0) vs. unseeded Lakeville North (8-2) at 5 p.m. and fourth-seeded Osseo (9-1) against fifth-seeded Totino-Grace (8-2) at 8 p.m.
