Letter: Hope issue will be raised at forum

To the editor:

Having tutored immigrants in the Roseville and other public school systems in the Twin Cities, when the City of Roseville holds a forum on immigrants Jan. 15 7 p.m. City Hall the primary question in my mind will be: are immigrants learning English fast enough and comprehensively enough to translate their usual good brains and work ethics into becoming productive citizens and is our public school system giving them the English instruction they need?

But the stickiest wicket may be cultural: how do you get immigrants to whom English is a second language to speak it at home when it is so much easier and more natural for them to speak their native languages? I hope this will be discussed at the forum.
