Ryan Leech nominated to U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Phillip Hanson to U.S. Air Force Academy

Sen. Al Franken, DFL-Minn., announced he has nominated Ryan Leech of Mendota Heights for admission to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and Phillip Hanson of Inver Grove Heights for admission to the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Leech is the son of Mike and Jill Leech, and Hanson is the son of Bill and Susan Hanson. If selected for admission, both would enter this summer.

“I am very pleased to nominate Ryan Leech and Phillip Hanson to U.S. service academies,” Franken said.  “Each year, I nominate several talented young Minnesotans to our nation’s military academies because of their strong character, academic and athletic achievements, and demonstrated leadership ability. I have no doubt that Ryan and Phillip have the ability to excel at service academies and become successful future leaders in our nation’s military.”

Leech, currently a senior at Henry Sibley High School, participates in both the trap and skeet team, and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also served as a volunteer at the Church of St. Peter.

Hanson is a senior at Rosemount High School and participates in both track and competitive paintball. He has been a volunteer at a local hospital.
