Vadnais Heights City Council approves new park and ride facility
In a 3-2 vote, the Vadnais Heights City Council approved an application submitted by Metro Transit for a site plan, special use permit and preliminary plat to build a commuter bus park and ride facility at 850 East County Road E. Council members Terry Nyblom and Craig Johnson voted against the motion at the March 5 council meeting.
A 300-space surface parking lot will be built just east of Wal-Mart and west of Interstate 35E. The park and ride facility will include a widened shoulder along I-35E with a waiting station, where express buses will pick up and drop off passengers on their way to and from downtown St. Paul.
City planning consultant William Weber said five southbound buses would arrive from the park and ride facility in Lino Lakes during the morning commute between approximately 6:30 and 8:30. In the afternoon and early evening, five northbound buses from downtown St. Paul would drop off passengers between approximately 3:30 and 5:30. The buses will run Monday through Friday.
Metro Transit planner Julie Quinn said Vadnais Heights’ new park and ride and the Lino Lakes park and ride will replace four smaller facilities in the north metro. The park and ride facilities to be closed are located at the Cub Foods in White Bear Township, the White Bear Township 17 Theatre, the White Bear Lake Shopping Center and Saint Genevieve Catholic Church in Centerville. Construction of the park and ride facility is scheduled to start in June and be completed in November.
