Bulletin-area girls hoops teams tumble

The post-season didn’t last long for the Bulletin-area high school girls basketball teams. All three squads lost in their respective section quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Knights, seeded seventh in Section 5AAAA, traveled to second-seeded Champlin Park and couldn’t keep up with the Rebels. Champlin Park took control early, led by 40 at halftime and won 76-42.

Three Rebels scored in double figures while Delany Kohler reached double digits for Irondale. Kohler led all scorers with 16 but no other Knight had more than five points.

The victory sends Champlin Park to Tuesday’s semifinals at Anoka High School against third-seeded Maple Grove. The other semifinal pits top-seeded Centennial against fourth-seeded Osseo.

The section championship will be decided Friday at Anoka at 8 p.m.

Irondale finishes the season with a record of 13-14.

Mounds View

The Mustangs also headed out on the road for the first round of the Section 5AAAA playoffs. Sixth-seeded Mounds View fell 69-58 to third-seeded Maple Grove.

Mounds View trailed by 15 at halftime but did outscore the Crimson in the second half. It wasn’t enough, however, as Maple Grove advances to Tuesday’s semifinals against second-seeded Champlin Park.

Mounds View’s Jacky Volkert tied two other players for game-high honors as she scored 16 points. Carlye Wright added 11 but Maple Grove countered with four players who scored in double figures.

The Mustangs finish the season 9-18.

St. Anthony Village

The Huskies entered their Section 3AAA quarterfinal looking for payback after losing to St. Paul Como Park during the regular season. St. Anthony was unable to gain revenge, however, as the Cougars ended the Huskies’ season with a 59-41 victory.

Andrayah Adams had a huge game for Como Park by scoring 32 points. She was her team’s only double-digit scorer but it was more than enough.

Kelly Lawson paced St. Anthony with 15 points but was only one of six Huskies to score. No other St. Anthony player had more than seven points.

The Huskies finish the season 12-15.

The win sends Como Park to Tuesday’s semifinals at Maple Grove High School against top-seeded and second-ranked Park Center, an 89-48 winner over eighth-seeded St. Paul Johnson in the quarterfinals.

The other semifinal on Tuesday pits third-seeded DeLaSalle against second-seeded Totino-Grace. Both teams were big winners in the quarterfinals.

The section championship game is set for Friday at 6 p.m. at Anoka High School.
