Wentz sentenced for injuring sisters in Lake Elmo crash while drunk
Jon Ross Wentz of St. Paul was recently sentenced for crashing his car into another vehicle in Lake Elmo while drunk, leaving two sisters with extensive injuries that have required multiple surgeries.
Wentz, 47, who pleaded guilty in December and was sentenced Feb. 27, careened across the center line while driving westbound on Highway 5 near Stillwater Lane in Lake Elmo at around 9 p.m. Aug. 28, 2012, according to Washington County District Court records.
His vehicle hit a car traveling eastbound, pinning in their seats the driver, Marah Sobczak, 20 at the time, and her sister, Kalley Sobczak, 15 at the time.
They both suffered severe injuries, undergoing multiple procedures. Kalley suffered a broken rib and fractures on her spine, and received screws and plates to help her fractured femur and clavicle heal, court documents said. Marah’s injuries included a long list of bone fractures and head trauma.
At the time of the crash, the older sister, a hockey goalie for Stillwater High School until 2010, was gearing up for another year at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, where she was a goalie on the women’s team. She reportedly returned to the ice in late 2013.
Tests on Wentz at Regions Hospital shortly after the crash put his blood-alcohol level at 0.08, and revealed he had consumed methadone, according to court records.
Due to a 2011 impaired driving incident, Wentz had his license revoked prior to the Lake Elmo crash, the documents said. He also was driving an uninsured vehicle.
Wentz was sentenced to nearly two years in prison, and another 11 months on supervised release for one felony count, with more than half a year already spent in jail. For the other count of criminal vehicular operation while drunk, he was sentenced to an additional five years of supervised probation after the prison sentence.
He was also ordered to pay restitution to the victims.
