Boys tennis: North off to a rocky start but hopeful of finding success

The North High boys tennis team is still in a state of flux.

The four spots for singles play seem to be established, but North coach Jerry Diebel said, “Our doubles are not yet set in their positions. The players competing for those positions include: Jesse Tretsven (10), Colin Cassin (12), Andrew Gooder (11), Marty Dinh (11), Ty Yang (11) Meipong Himmtann (11), Petersen Thao (9), Tommy Yang (11) and Chveshe Yang (9).”

At the singles positions will be No. 1 Peter Lindberg (12), No. 2 Ben Horstman (11), No. 3 Dan Schultz (12) and No. 4 Selam Bekele (10).

The Polars have played two matches thus far in the early season. On April 8, they were downed by Hill-Murray, 5-2, and on April 10 they lost to Mahtomedi, 6-1.

Looking back at those matches, Diebel noted the outstanding performance by his No. 1 singles player. He said, “Through the first week, Peter Lindberg is 2-0 with wins over (the top players for) Hill-Murray and Mahtomedi. In the Hill-Murray match he defeated Calvin Rueb 6-3, 6-3. In the Mahtomedi match he defeated Ryder Comfort 1-6, 6-0, 6-4.

“Peter has gotten off to a great start. His victory over Mahtomedi at No. 1 singles is the first in at least a decade.”

Diebel then added, “Ben Horstman is 1-1 so far, defeating Hill-Murray’s Seyoung Cha 7-5, 4-6 10-8 in a third-set tiebreaker.”

The Polars beat Johnson in a preseason scrimmage 6-1 before dropping their two Classic Suburban Conference contests to Hill-Murray and Mahtomedi.

With the uncertainty of the weather this spring, there have been many cancelled events. Rescheduled matches may be found by going to:
