Letter: 'Yes' to both

To the editor:

I would like to offer my support for both ISD 197 referendum questions on the May 6 ballot. The funding that is requested for building dedicated early childhood space (question 2) to address crowding in the elementary schools is both necessary and prudent.

ISD 197 earns consistently favorable ratings from district residents and third party authorities for excellent fiscal management. I was personally involved on the subcommittee that studied increasing enrollment and space issues and came to have a high level of confidence in the Early Childhood Advisory Committee recommendation for dedicated space. One solution to two problems rarely comes together as well as this proposal does to meet Early Learning needs and alleviate elementary space needs.

District leadership has admirably balanced forward thinking and financial responsibility in proposing the technology levy amount (question 1).

I believe that the proposal to renew technology funding at an elevated level is highly appropriate at this time.

I would encourage anyone who has trouble visualizing the “21st Century skills” and learning opportunities that are supported by this additional funding to talk to one of the visionary teachers who are already implementing them. They can share examples of how these tools impact learning and learners in ways that make me shiver. Very exciting!

A cost of less than $100 per year for most property owners will yield returns in property values and community assets that far exceed the investment. Please vote “Yes” to both referendum questions on May 6.
