St. Paul Almanac story deadline March 15

The St. Paul Almanac is looking for submissions for its 2017 edition. The deadline for submissions is March 15, 2016.

The Almanac is looking for personal stories, memories, art, photos, current community experiences, and other shared experiences related to the St. Paul neighborhoods and communities.

Each submission must be 800 words or fewer. If you need help to complete your

China Garden public meeting

A community meeting will be held to review designs and plans for a Phalen China Garden at Lake Phalen.  

The meeting is Thursday March 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Phalen Recreation Center Community Room, 1000 Wheelock Parkway.  

This meeting will provide an opportunity to explain the design, answer questions, obtain input from residents and help generate support for the proposal. 

The meeting is hosted by the Payne-Phalen Environment Committee of District Five.

 

District 5 Transportation Committee meeting 

The District Five Transportation Committee will meet on Thursday March 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the District Five Planning Council office, 506 Kenny Road in Suite 130. 

The group is working on the St. Paul Bike Plan implementation, Greenbrier Bike Boulevard, Aguirre Street connection, Bike Lanes on Payne Avenue, Grand Rounds, pedestrian safety events and bus stop improvement plans. All are encouraged to participate.

 

2nd Annual Fish Fry

The East Side Area Business Association and the Arcade-Phalen American Legion Post 577 will host a fish fry on Friday, March 11, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post 577, 1129 Arcade Ave. 

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids ages 10 and under. Tickets can be purchased at the door or through an ESABA board member.

The fish fry will have all-you-can-eat fish, potatoes, beans, salad, coleslaw, and freshly baked goods. A cash bar will also be available.

 

East Side Collaborative Employment and Resource Fair

The job fair is March 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Arlington Hills Community Center, 1200 Payne Ave. 

There will be employers from the healthcare, construction, customer service and administrative fields, among others. Employers include Maplewood Care Center, Cemstone, Mississippi Market, Red Cross, Augustana Care, Comcast, the Department of Labor and Industry, Ujaama Place, and many others. Employers interested in registering can contact Ann Tyler at atyler@clues.org.

It is recommended to dress as you would for a job interview, bring multiple copies of your resume, bring two forms of ID, be prepared to fill out applications with work history and at least three references; be prepared to network, and be prepared to share skills and experiences.

There will be resume help and free printing available the day of the fair.

Teen job fair

There will be a Teen Job Fair on April 23 from noon to 3 p.m. at Arlington Hills Community Center in Community Room A, 1200 Payne Ave. 

The fair will help teens connect with organizations, employers, and help build job skills.

Ice house removal

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources wants to remind anglers that Monday, March 7 is the deadline to remove ice houses off lakes in the lower two-thirds of the state.

If shelters are not removed by the deadline, owners will be prosecuted and structures may be confiscated and removed, or destroyed by a conservation officer. 

After removal date, shelters may remain on the ice between midnight and one hour before sunrise only when occupied or attended. Storing or leaving shelters on a public access is prohibited.
