DFL endorses Mendota Heights resident for open District 52 Senate seat

Dr. Matt Klein

Dr. Matt Klein received the DFL Party endorsement on Saturday, March 12, in his race for the state Senate District 52 seat.

It took four ballots at the District 52 DFL convention for Klein to receive the endorsement. Klein, 48, led on the first ballot and advanced his lead at each subsequent ballot until his two challengers, Maureen Ramirez and Todd Podgorski, conceded.

“In my acceptance speech, I acknowledged the tremendous strengths brought to the race by both of my competitors. Strong challengers made our campaign better and more prepared for a general election challenge in the fall,” Klein says.

Klein is an internal medicine doctor at Hennepin County Medical Center, and serves on the West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan School Board.

He says his areas of passion have not changed since he entered the race earlier this year. As a physician, Klein says he sees firsthand the need to provide health care to all Minnesotans.

As a District 197 school board, Klein says he sees the need to provide a quality education to all students.

“My medical work also inspires my passion to fight for our environment and combat climate change. If elected, I will be the only physician in either chamber of the Legislature; I think that experience spoke to the [District 52 convention] delegates,” Klein says.

Now focusing on November, Klein says his strategy and focus will remain the same. His team will continue to pursue a door-knocking approach to grassroots mobilization.

“We plan to start in April and May by shining a light on the increasing diversity in our district, by reaching out to groups from all cultures, religions, and backgrounds from within our community,” Klein says.

The state Senate seat is currently held by longtime incumbent Jim Metzen of South St. Paul, who announced in January that he would not be seeking reelection. The 72-year-old Metzen has been battling a reoccurrence of lung cancer and is being treated by doctors at Mayo Clinic.

Senate District 52 includes parts or all of Eagan, Inver Grove Heights, Lilydale, Mendota, Mendota Heights, Sunfish Lake, South St. Paul and West St. Paul.
