RAHS golfers compete at state

A few years ago, the Minnesota State High School League moved its state golf tournaments a week later in June. This year’s tournaments were held June 14-15 and two students from Roseville Area High School participated.

Senior David Pauletti and sophomore Hannah Bruns spent those two days trying to tame Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids.

David Pauletti

Pauletti closed out his prep athletic career by playing in the Class AAA tournament at Bunker Hills. His two-day score of 162 landed him in 64th place. He shot 78 (39-39) on day one and 84 (38-46) on day two.

Minnetonka swept both titles in the boys’ event. Junior Ben Sigel won the individual crown with a 139 and beat runner-up Harrison Cooper, a senior at Simley, by six shots.

The Skippers won the team championship by 13 strokes over runner-up Lakeville South. Minnetonka’s top four golfers teamed up to fire a 594 while the Cougars came in with a 607.

Hannah Bruns

Bruns was making her second consecutive appearance in the Class AAA tournament and she improved mightily over last year’s performance.

Bruns carded a two-day score of 176 and finished tied for 60th with Stillwater senior Jane Delahunt. Bruns shot 92 (47-45) on day one and improved by eight shots on day two with an 84 (41-43).

As a freshman in the 2015 tournament, Bruns shot 206 and finished in 83rd place.

The Class AAA state champion this season was New Prague senior Taylor Ledwein, who topped the field by shooting 143. That was six strokes better than co-runners-up Hannah Hankinson and Megan Welch. Hankinson is a senior from Edina and Welch is a sophomore from Lakeville South.

Edina captured the team championship by shooting an even 600. That was 36 shots better than runner-up Forest Lake, one of four Suburban East Conference teams to qualify for the state tournament. The others were Stillwater, Woodbury and Mounds View, which finished fourth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
