Girls hockey post-season awaits Pioneers, North/Tartan

The playoffs have arrived for high school girls hockey in Minnesota and the teams from Hill-Murray and North/Tartan have a couple of more days to prepare for their first-round contests. The Section 4AA tournament kicks off on Feb. 11.

Hill-Murray (19-4-1) is the likely No. 1 seed in the section. The second-ranked Pioneers are going in search of their fifth straight state-tournament appearance and their sixth overall.

North/Tartan (13-11) can expect a seed in the four, five or six range. No girl from Tartan has appeared in a state tournament and North last qualified for state in 2004.

Seeds for the section tournament were released past the deadline for this edition of the Review.

Hill-Murray closed out the regular season on Feb. 4 with a game against Benilde-St. Margaret’s and North/Tartan was tentatively scheduled to face Simley in a makeup game on Feb. 8. Results of those games were not available for this edition of the Review.

The Section 4AA playoffs begin with the quarterfinals on Feb. 11. The semifinals are set for Feb. 14 and the championship game is Feb. 17. All games are being played at Aldrich Arena.

With one game remaining, Hill-Murray’s top scorer was Abigail Boreen, who also led the team in goals with 25 and assists with 24. Her 49 points put her 17 ahead of teammate Lindsey Featherstone (11-21 – 32).

Hill-Murray goaltender Ava Bailey had a record of 15-4-1 to go along with a miniscule goals-against average of 1.37 and a save percentage of .939.

Maddie Ciolkosz and Claire Meeder sat atop the scoring standings for North/Tartan. Ciolkosz led in goals with 14, assists with 14 and points with 28. Meeder was second in all three categories with 10 goals, 13 assists and 23 points.

Olivia Schultz is North/Tartan’s main goaltender, having played 63 percent of the team’s minutes. She was 9-6 with a 2.20 goals-against average and a save percentage of .913.
