St. Anthony duo headed to Nordic state meet

Two members of the Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village boys Nordic ski team are headed to the state meet this week. Both skiers come from the St. Anthony Village part of that co-op.

Senior Xavier Mansfield and sophomore Joe Lynch both qualified for state via their performances at the Section 5 championships on Feb. 8 at Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis.

Mansfield, who entered the section meet as the No. 1-ranked individual in the state according to Skinnyski.com, lived up to that ranking by winning the section pursuit championship. His combined time in the two races was 23 minutes, 44.43 seconds and he also had the best time in both of the individual races. He completed the classic race in 13 minutes, five seconds and the skate race in 10 minutes, 39.44 seconds.

Mansfield added the section pursuit title to an already impressive list of victories this season. Among them was the Northwest Suburban Conference pursuit championship that he won in late January.

Lynch secured his spot in the state meet by placing sixth overall in the Section 5 pursuit standings. His time for the two races was 25 minutes, 1.15 seconds. He ended up with the 10th-best classic time and the fourth-best skate time.

As a team, Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village finished third, one spot out of a team berth in the state tournament. Champlin Park and Mora were clearly the two best teams in the section meet as they took first and second place, respectively. Champlin Park amassed 377 points and Mora finished with 376. Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village’s final point total was 340.

In the girls’ section competition, Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village finished 10th with 195 points. Maple Grove captured the team championship with 362 points and Andover was second at 360.

The state Nordic ski racing state meet is Feb. 16 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.
