Community picnic

The Payne-Phalen Community Picnic will be held Tuesday Aug. 29 at Phalen Regional Park Picnic Pavilion, 1600 Phalen Drive from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Hot dogs and beverages will be provided. Bring a dish to share and invite your neighbors. Children’s activities provided in partnership with St. Paul Parks and Recreation. Family Course on Mental Illnesses 

Do you have a family member living with a mental illness? NAMI Minnesota (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is offering a free educational course that helps families gain a greater understanding of mental illness, discuss resources, build communication skills, reduce stress and find support. Over 4,000 Minnesota families have benefited from this course. Join others for this series taught by family members who have walked the walk. The Family-to-Family course will meet weekly for 12 weeks. The course starts Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 6:30-9 p.m., Jewish Family Services, 1633 W. 7th St, in St. Paul. Meet with Rep. Betty McCollum

 Join Fourth Congressional District Rep. Betty McCollum on Wednesday, Aug. 9 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. as she meets neighbors over a glass of lemonade at the East Side Freedom Library, located at 1105 Greenbrier St. McCollum will provide some updates on issues in Washington, but also wants to hear from the neighborhood about your thoughts and concerns.


Summer school supply drive

Through Aug. 20, Merrick Community Services is collecting backpacks and school supplies to distribute to kids in need on St. Paul’s East Side. All supplies will be distributed at the annual Back to School Celebration. There are several ways to help support the School Supply Drive:

• Donate supplies:

Donate new school supplies to Merrick Community Services. Most needed supplies include backpacks, notebooks, colored, pencils, flash drives, and scientific calculators.

A school supply drive shopping list can be found at merrickcs.org.

Supplies can be dropped off Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at Merrick’s offices, 1669 Arcade St. or at the Merrick Food Shelf, 1740 Van Dyke St. If you need help coordinating a donation, please contact Taylor Anderson at tanderson@merrickcs.org or 651-219-5557.

• Host a donation bin:

Would your organization like to host a donation bin for Merrick’s School Supply Drive? Merrick will provide all of the necessary materials including flyers, shopping lists and a donation bin and pick up the supplies that you collect. • Make a financial contribution:

Make a donation to support the School Supply Drive. All funds raised will be used to purchase backpacks and supplies that will be distributed to East Side students.

$5 buys crayons and colored pencils for an budding artist

$10 buys notebooks, folders, pencils, and pens for an aspiring writer

$20 buys a scientific calculator for a young mathematician

$50 buys a backpack and supplies for an elementary school student

$100 buys a backpack and supplies for a high school student

• Volunteer:

Want to help sort supplies and assemble backpacks? Volunteer shifts are available on Thursday, Aug. 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., 2 to 5 p.m., and 5 to 8 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help out at the Back to School Celebration. Shifts are available on Saturday, Aug. 26 from 8:30 to 11a.m and from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. All are welcome.
