LETTER: O’Meara can tackle the issues facing Mounds View schools

To the Editor:

I’m writing in support of Brendan O’Meara, who is running for the Mounds View School Board.

There are some big issues facing the district right now, particularly regarding space. As a Mounds View alumnus who attended the district during the 60s and 70s, and whose children graduated from the district, I take this issue personally. The space issues during those decades meant the students who lived in the area directly adjacent to Mounds View High School were shuttled from school to school until Valentine Hills was built. I know how disruptive space issues can be.

All the schools in the district are at or above capacity and enrollment is projected to increase. Teachers are meeting with students in the hallways, and hallways are overcrowded. Frankly, I worry about the safety of staff and students from a fire safety and evacuation standpoint. This is not the way a world-class education system should be progressing.

Brendan has children attending elementary school in the district and is active on the PTA. He is a lifelong resident and graduate of the district. As a contractor, banker, CPA, etc., he has a unique perspective on the importance of our school system to the larger economy.

Join me and school board chair Amy Jones and board member Jonathan Weinhagen, who endorse Brendan O’Meara’s candidacy, in voting in the school board election and on the bond proposal. Early voting is already open in New Brighton, and opens at the Shoreview Library Oct. 31.

Vote for Brendan O’Meara!
