Chocolate "Philly" Fudge - 3rd Place

Kathy El-Kandelgy

A tried and true family favorite

Kathy El-Kandelgy’s tasty Chocolate “Philly” Fudge earned her third place.

She says the recipe has been in the family since the 1950s.

“My mother used to make it. We would not only have it for Christmas, but anytime of the year that someone had a taste for fudge and didn’t want to put a lot of work into it,” El-Kandegly says, adding this recipe is one that just doesn’t fail.

She says a lot of her go-to recipes have been passed down through her family, though she’s found some good ones in the Lillie News recipe contest, too. A certain fruit cake comes to mind, which El-Kandegly describes as wonderful and easy to do.

El-Kandegly says she used to help cook as a child because she was interested in it. She would help her mom and grandma, and took home economics in high school.

One of the projects was to make a turkey dinner. Her mom let her do all the work.

“It turned out fine,” she says. “It was nice.”

Surprised by her third-place win on her first time entering the recipe contest, El-Kandelgy says cooking is something she’s always enjoyed doing.

“I guess everybody does,” she says with a chuckle, “if they do a lot of cooking.”
