Hannah Burlingame photos/Review • On March 14, students at Simley High School in Inver Grove Heights joined schools across the state and nation in a walkout to peacefully protest gun violence in schools. At 10 a.m., students left their classes for 17 minutes, one minute for each person killed in last month’s school shooting in Parkland, Florida. A school email was sent to parents March 12 letting them know regular attendance procedures would apply. This meant students who left the building would be given an unexcused absence, unless they were excused by a parent. Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to write to their representatives in order to voice their concerns about gun violence.
