LETTER: Raise the tobacco sale age

To the editor:

I would like to thank Rep. Leon Lillie for his leadership and signing on to legislation to raise the state tobacco sale age to 21.

Aggressive marketing of cheap flavored products and their wide availability in convenience stores make them both appealing and accessible to vulnerable youth.

As a parent of a soon-to-be middle schooler, I am doing what I can to teach my kids about the dangers of tobacco addiction, but it’s not enough. A T21 policy is needed. It will limit access by increasing the gap between high schoolers and those who can legally buy tobacco products keeping products like e-cigarettes out of our schools.

Thank you, Rep. Leon, for putting the health of young people first and listening to their voices. Prevention works and policies like this are the best way to keep our families healthy for years to come.
