Inquiring Minds: Welcome to Makerspace

Q. I’ve heard that the library has a tool that will let you cut a vinyl shape that can be transferred to cloth. How does that work, and when can I use it?

A. Welcome to the World of Makerspace. Want to whip up a batch of personalized sweatshirts for an upcoming family reunion? Or maybe you’d like to adorn your personal possessions with a cutout of your totem animal or your favorite sports logo. The library has a vinyl-cutting software program, Silhouette Studio, that can execute your most creative designs. And that’s not all. Library Makerspace sessions also offer access to technology that ranges from sewing machines to three-dimensional printers, with material available for art projects as well. Our three-dimensional printers have been used to create product prototypes for entrepreneurs, new mouthpieces for musical instruments, and lots and lots of toy robots. Come learn the possibilities for 21st century DIY. The library holds weekly Makerspace sessions for adults at the Roseville, Maplewood and Shoreview branches. No pre-registration is necessary, and some materials are provided. Your only limitation will be the boundaries of your own ingenuity. Check with your local branch for more information.
