LETTER: Thank you Mendota Heights for protecting our youth

To the Editor:

Thank you Mendota Heights City Council for passing an ordinance to restrict sales of flavored tobacco products in our community.

As a soon-to-be physician resident physician at the University of Minnesota, I appreciate the city taking the initiative to help prevent future generations from using tobacco. Taking flavored tobacco out of Mendota Heights stores is a sure-fire way to protect our youth from these dangerous products that are marketed to kids and intended to addict them to tobacco for the rest of their lives.

The tobacco industry has a long history of promoting its products to young people. Flavors such as strawberry, fruit punch, and chocolate are one way the industry attempts to attract youth. With vaping gaining popularity in our middle and high schools, it’s now more important than ever for cities to take simple actions like this. I am proud that the community where I grew up is taking proactive tobacco prevention steps like this. Mendota Heights is leading the way, and I hope other cities will follow.
