LETTER: On stolen catalytic converters

To the Editor:

The police page sometimes states that catalytic converters are stolen from cars because they “contain copper.” The exhaust system part actually contains several rare metals, including palladium, rhodium, trace amounts of platinum and copper.

This is why low-life thieves steal them off of unattended cars or trucks. Other low-life salvage companies buy them.

Unfortunately, replacement costs the vehicle owner from $450 to $1750, depending on the model of vehicle. One probably should check to see if their insurance will cover the loss.
