NEWSBRIEF: Tentative Interstate 35W closures

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is tentatively planning for closures of Interstate 35W between Interstate 694 and Highway 62 in Minneapolis starting 9 p.m., Friday, Aug. 3 through 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6.

In a MnDOT press release, planners said similar areas that were closed between July 27 and July 30 may be closed again during the first weekend of August. Affected areas include:

Southbound Interstate 35W will be open to traffic south of 46th Street in Minneapolis. Access from southbound Interstate 35W between Highway 280 and Interstate 694 will remain open to Highway 280, Highway 36 and local roads. Motorists will be detoured around the closure using Highway 62, Highway 100 and Interstate 694 or Interstate 35E to Interstate 94 east.

Access from northbound Interstate 35W between Country Road C and Interstate 694 will remain open. Access to northbound Highway 280 will be restricted at Interstate 94, and northbound Highway 280 will remain open from Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis to Larpenteur Avenue. From Larpenteur, traffic will be detoured to Cleveland Avenue, Highway 36 and Snelling Avenue.

The closure is needed for two highway projects. The 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown project will be working on utility installation across Interstate 35W between Interstate 94 and Highway 62. The Interstate 35W Resurfacing Minneapolis to Roseville project will be working on Interstate 35W between Interstate 94 and Highway 280.

Crews will begin closing the on and off ramps about one to two hours before closing the interstate.
