Maplewood Nature Center Events for August

Maplewood Nature Center & Neighborhood Preserves, 2659 E. Seventh St. in Maplewood offers these events: Unless otherwise noted, to register for any of the events below go to www.maplewoodnaturecenter.com and click on the Register Online Go button. • Phenology walk: This walk is for adults and children 10 and up with an adult and will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10. This is a free event, but please register by Aug. 9. Help the Nature Center study and record during the current season. The group will walk and observe plants and wildlife happenings on the trails and record what is seen. There is the option to bring your own camera, smartphone or tablet, but please download the iNaturalist app ahead of time. If it is rainy, the program will be cancelled.

• Super Spiders: This event is for children ages 11 and up or ages 4 to 10, with an adult, and will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11. The fee is $5/child; register by Thursday, Aug. 9. Spiders are nature’s bug zappers. Meet live spiders and learn about webs and spider silk. Put together a spider identification book to take home. Hike to look for orb, funnel, jumping and crab spiders. Wear shoes suitable for hiking. 

• Magnificent Monarchs: This event for all ages is from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18. Registration and prepayment of $5/person is due by Thursday, Aug. 16. Find out why and how monarchs are tagged. Learn about their magnificent migration. See monarchs in their life cycle stages. Make a monarch seed bomb for native seed packets to sow that will help these beautiful butterflies survive.

• S’more Fun in the Sun: This program is for children ages 8 and older with an adult from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25. Registration and prepayment of $4/ person is due by Thursday, Aug. 23. Build solar ovens to cook tasty treats, power fans with real solar cells, meet an animal that uses the sun to power its movement, go on a hike around the pond and finish up with fun activities in the nature play yard! Participants will learn a lot about how nature and people use the sun to survive.

Maplewood Nature Center is a 40-acre preserve operated by the City of Maplewood and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Nature Play Yard adjoins the Visitor Center. Trails wind through oak woods and marsh and are open every day from dawn to dusk. Use of facilities is free of charge.
