NEWSBRIEF: Water use permits insurance requirements lowered

Those seeking water use permits in Washington County will have their expenses reduced, as the County Board reduced the Sheriff’s Office insurance requirement for water use permits from $1.5 million to $1 million Sept. 18.

The Sheriff’s Office received feedback from small fishing events whose leaders said that they can’t host an event or fundraiser in the county due to the insurance premium cost for water permits. In the past, the county required $1.5 million for the water use permits. Insurance companies generally do not sell in $500,000 increments, which required the event to purchase $2 million in coverage. The Sheriff’s Office requested the reduction to $1 million for insurance to support the fundraisers and any other small businesses or organizations that wish to receive a water use permit.

For information on permits for a contest, race, regatta or other event on or in the waters of this county, see www.co.washington.mn.us and search “surface water use permits.”
