NEWSBRIEF: Free bag of Thanksgiving groceries

A complete Thanksgiving Dinner for people in need starts with a sign up and then a pick-up. In the last two weeks of October and into November, individuals can sign up at Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities for a bag of Thanksgiving groceries for a family of five.

“The Mission, with help from Twin Cities churches and Thrivent Financial, are making a Thanksgiving meal possible for families in need,” said Dan Furry, communications and marketing manager for Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities. In 2017, the Mission gave out enough groceries to give over 56 thousand people a meal cooked at home, believed to be the largest distribution of its kind in the state. This is the 61st Thanksgiving food distribution event for the Union Gospel Mission.

The sign up happens at the Ober Community Center, 376 Western Ave., on Oct. 25 from 3:30 to 7 p.m. and Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and at Union Gospel Mission’s Men’s Campus, 435 University Ave. E., on Oct. 30 and Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Two pieces of identification are needed — a photo ID and a piece of mail showing the current house address.

The meal includes vegetables, cranberry sauce, five pounds of potatoes, gravy mix, a box of stuffing mix, cake mixes and a frozen turkey.  Only one bag of groceries is available per household. The food is scheduled for pick up at the Union Gospel Mission’s Men’s Campus on the Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week.
