Payne-Phalen Community Council meeting

The Payne-Phalen Community Council board will hold a short business meeting followed by a holiday social gathering on Tuesday, Dec. 11. The meeting and event will be held at the Far East Bar and Restaurant, 959 Arcade St., in the downstairs party room starting at 6:30 p.m.  Food will be a la carte (everyone pays their own), and there is a full cash bar for those interested. Agenda discussion will be on citywide trash collection concerns and nominations for the Neighborhood Honor Roll award.

 

Karen New Year celebration

Stop by Washington Tech Magnet School, located at 1495 Rice St., on Tuesday Jan. 1 for the 2758 Karen New Year Celebration. The main program runs from 10 a.m. to noon and entertainment continues from noon to 6 p.m. There will be speeches, men and women volleyball tournaments, a karaoke competition for kids, raffle prizes and an improv competition. Youth activities at Wilder Recreation Center

Wilder Recreation Center, located at 958 Jessie St., has some unique youth activities coming up. Kids ages 11 through 15 can learn how to produce and star in the local Wilder Recreation Center TV news by joining the TV Interview Club. The club will meet every Monday and Wednesday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. starting Dec. 10 and running through March 27. Call the center at 651-298-5727 to register for the free club. On Dec. 11, 12, and 13, from 5 to 6 p.m., kids ages 12 through 17 can stop by the recreation center for the Little Elves Workshop to make some holiday gifts. No registration is needed and the events are free.

 

Holiday cookies and crafts

The Hayden Heights Recreation Center, 1965 Hoyt Ave. E., will have cookies to decorate and holiday-themed art activities on Dec. 10 from 6 to 7 p.m. for kids ages eight to 12 years old. The events cost $10. To register, call the recreation center at 651-298-5716 or sign up at the center in person. Registration can also be done online at stpaul.gov/HaydenHeightsRec. 

 

Santa’s workshop

Kids may stop by the Hazel Park Recreation Center, 945 Hazel Ave. N., on Dec. 11, 5:30 to 8 p.m. to come to Santa’s workshop to purchase gifts for their parents, siblings and friends. All gifts will be under $1 with a limit of $10 per child. Participants will be chaperoned by staff, St. Paul Police officers and Harding High School ROTC members, who will help kids wrap their gifts. This event is open to kids ages 17 and under. For more information call the recreation center at 651-501-6351.

 

East Side Elders

Elder Cafe returns on Thursday, Dec. 13, noon to 2 p.m., this time with a holiday party. The meal and social gathering will include holiday music performances by Jennifer Eckes and Christopher Stordalen. There will also be a silent auctions, raffle and goodie bags. To reserve a meal and a ride — if needed — call East Side Elders at 651-683-2326. For those with a special diet request, please make the reservation at least a week in advance. The cost of the event is $5. The event will be held at East Side Elders, 463 Maria Ave.
