Mounds View rolls in opener

Players with varsity experience are few on the Mounds View High School football team’s roster this season but that didn’t seem to hamper the Mustangs in their season opener last Thursday at Woodbury. Mounds View kicked off the 2013 campaign with a 20-point victory over the Royals.
Matt Hunt found the end zone three times for Mounds View, which rolled to a 27-7 victory.

Mustangs volleyball has sights set on conference

With only two players missing from last year’s squad, the Mounds View High School volleyball team is prepared to make a run at the Suburban East Conference championship. Head coach Tom Weko sees a wide open league.
“Everybody lost some key players and that leaves some weaknesses,” said Weko. “I think we have just as good of a chance as anyone of winning the conference.”

MVHS boys cross country in search of third straight state trip

The Mounds View High School boys cross country team has qualified for the state meet in each of the past two seasons. With five of its top seven runners back from a year ago, the Mustangs are looking to make it three consecutive state berths.
It won’t be easy, however. Section 5AA has at least three teams with legitimate chances of finishing in the top two, which is the number of teams that make state from each section.

Prep football kicks off this week - Bulletin Area

The football teams at Irondale, Mounds View and St. Anthony Village high schools, thanks in large part to their well-organized conferences, avoid the scheduling issues that have plagued other teams in the state. Because of that, the Knights, Mustangs and Huskies haven't had to utilize the Zero Week scheduling exception.
All three teams play their first games this week. Here's a look at each team leading up to their season openers.

MVHS girls tennis dealing with turnover

An old adage says that top athletic programs don’t rebuild, they reload. Mounds View High School’s girls tennis team is one of those programs but this year’s team has some extra reloading to do.
The Mustangs graduated seven of their top 10 players from a year ago.

Experience on Huskies' side

Following what head coach Travis MacLeod termed a "learning season" a year ago, the St. Anthony Village High School cross country teams have solid cores back this fall. That has both teams looking to improve in both the conference and section meets.
The Huskies' boys squad returns nine letterwinners and the girls team brings back six.

Hamburger feels he can still be a helper

At this time two years ago, Mark Hamburger was less than two weeks from making his Major League Baseball debut with the Texas Rangers. If Hamburger is to ever get back to that level of baseball, he’s going to need to sign with a very patient organization.
A Shoreview native and Mounds View High School graduate, Hamburger faces a 50-game suspension for a second positive test for marijuana. If he does latch on with a big league organization, he will have to serve that suspension whether he is in the minors or with the big club.

Numbers are in Irondale’s favor

Last year’s Irondale High School girls cross country team finished in the bottom half of the standings in both the conference and section meets. The Knights are hoping for marked improvements over those results this year.
A major factor in Irondale’s confidence going into the 2013 season is simply the number of girls in the program.
“We have many more girls out for the team this year, which will increase our depth tremendously,” said second-year Irondale head coach Brent McGrew.
