Mustangs realize dream at Target Field

Ray Kinsella built the original Field of Dreams in the middle of an Iowa cornfield in a motion picture starring Kevin Costner. For the Mounds View High School baseball team its field of dreams is a few hours north of Kinsella’s.
The Mustangs fulfilled two dreams on June 17 in downtown Minneapolis. No. 1, they got to play at Target Field, the home of the Minnesota Twins. No. 2, they won the first baseball state championship in school history.
“Target Field, it doesn’t get any better than this,” said senior co-captain Lars Anderson.

State meet roundup: track and field

All three Bulletin-area high schools sent participants to the state track and field meet on June 7-8 at Hamline University in St. Paul. Those competing finished with varying degrees of success.
Irondale High School senior Ben Ojika turned in the highest finish of any area athlete when he took second place in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Ojika started strong and held the lead about halfway through the race but a familiar foe closed the gap and eventually passed Ojika. Spring Lake Park High School senior CJ Janu, who Ojika has dueled with numerous times over the years in the North Suburban Conference and Section 5AA, won the event with a time of 14.37 seconds while Ojika clocked in at 14.49.

Mounds View baseball ends state drought

As is customary when a team clinches a berth in the state tournament, the members of the Mounds View High School baseball team piled on top of each other in a celebratory heap last Wednesday at Midway Stadium. But there was a little more to it than just whooping it up because they’d made it to state.
Not only did the Mustangs realize their season-long goal of winning the section and getting the chance to perform on Minnesota high school baseball’s biggest stage, they ended a tournament drought that had reached 13 years.

St. Anthony softball brings home another trophy

In its previous five trips to the state tournament, the St. Anthony Village High School fastpitch softball team has won at least one game on the first day of the tournament each time. Last week the Huskies extended that streak despite having their championship hopes dashed in the first game.
After falling to Kasson-Mantorville in the quarterfinals, St. Anthony rebounded to win its final two games and claim the consolation trophy.
