Cowern earns statewide ‘character development’ award

In celebration of Character Recognition Day on May 8, Synergy & Leadership Exchange presented awards for positive character development to 17 schools and four community programs at the Character Recognition Awards Ceremony at the Minnesota State Capitol. Cowern Elementary School received a Promising Practices Award for “Promoting Peace Across the Grade Levels,” a practice where each student participates in a cross-grade level peace group, meeting on a monthly basis to focus on a specific topic and engage in activities that promote peace building and positive relationships.

622 approves settlements, teacher layoffs

At its Tuesday, April 22 meeting, the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School Board approved a settlement on an outstanding contract with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 70 and District 622.
A settlement was also approved between the school district and the Office and Professional Employees International Union, Local 12, which covers education assistants.

District 622 receives $350,000 STEM grant

Hill-Murray to add 6th-grade program next fall

Competition for students among area private schools has just gotten a little tougher.
Hill-Murray School, located on Larpenteur Avenue in Maplewood, announced this November it will be adding sixth grade starting in the 2014-2015 school year. The Catholic-affiliated school has offered grades seventh-12th since the late 1980s.
In a letter sent to students’ families this fall, president Susan Paul explains the addition was something the Hill-Murray board of trustees “wrestled” with for a number of years.

Liberty signs lease with St. Pius X

Beginning with the 2014-15 academic year, Liberty Classical Academy, an independent college-preparatory private Christian school will have a new pre-K through 12th-grade home campus in the St. Pius X school building, 3878 Highland Avenue, White Bear Lake. Liberty’s new campus features 22 classrooms full-size gymnasium, theater and concert stage, library and cafeteria.
