If you’ve noticed a little extra activity around your local high school this week, it’s probably because official practices have started for the fall prep sports season. From cross country to football to volleyball, the kids are returning to school for first-week workouts and practices.
A pair of men’s amateur baseball teams from the Bulletin area participated in the state tournament last weekend. Unfortunately, their stay in the tournament didn’t last very long.
The Continental Diamond Cutters and the St. Anthony Hogs both qualified for the Minnesota Class A state tournament out of the Skyline League and played in the tournament last week at Red Haddox Field in Bloomington. The Hogs went 0-1 while the Diamond Cutters finished 0-2.
Despite not coming into existence until 1990, the Tri-City Red American Legion baseball team has racked up the most Fourth District Most Valuable Player awards. Tri-City picked up No. 13 this summer with the selection of Ben Mezzenga.

In a somewhat strange doubleheader day, the North St. Paul Post 39 team was routed 10-1 in a noon game Sunday, July 20 with Tri-City Red, and then traveled to Cretin-Derham Hall baseball field in St. Paul for a 6 p.m. contest with the Hamline Post 418 Purple and won a slugfest.
The summer baseball season for the Tri-City Red American Legion baseball team is set to last for at least another weekend. Tri-City is headed to the state tournament, which starts Friday for all 16 of the participating teams.

Tournament features tight games, pitching gems and blowouts
The American Legion State Sub-Section 7 playoffs began July 22 at Kuenkel Field in North St. Paul.
After two years of the sub-state era of Minnesota American Legion baseball, Rosetown has yet to enjoy any post-season success. The Rockets went 0-2 in last week’s Sub-State 7 tournament to fall to 0-4 in sub-state playoff games.
