Expanded inventory and some great customer service

Brothers Dan, left, and Terry Furlong are looking forward to celebrating 30 yeas of owning Furlong’s Liquor in Oakdale next year.

The Minnesota Room, which opened last year, is full of different beers brewed right here in Minnesota, as well as local spirits.

For nearly three decades, Furlong’s Liquor has been a staple in the east metro, offering one of the largest selections of wine, beer and spirits in the region at competitive prices.

The store’s new Minnesota room provides an additional 1,500-square-feet of retail space, making that vast inventory even bigger.

“People are catching on to it. People are excited to try the different things that Minnesota has to offer,” says Terry Furlong, who co-owns the store, with his brother Dan.

The Furlongs say they wanted the Minnesota room, which opened in 2015, to have “an ‘Up North’ feel,” reminiscent of a lakeside lodge.

The Minnesota room is amply stocked with a variety of craft beers.

“We like the idea of shopping local,” Terry says. “Minnesota is becoming a real craft brewing area with new microbreweries popping up, and so many great beers available.”

Besides craft beer, the Minnesota room also features several wines and spirits from regional wineries and distilleries.

Customers can sample the new products at the cozy wood bar next to a Minnesota-themed mural.

The Furlong brothers say that now is a great time to be a beer drinker. Besides all the local Minnesota beers, their store has expanded its inventory of microbrews. Even the brands in the Minnesota room are constantly changing.

For beer aficionados, Furlong’s will keep you up-to-date with the newest brews through its “Beer Club.”

The expansion for the Minnesota room also allowed more space for the store’s wine room, which offers thousands of different wines from around the world.

Furlong’s continues to offer its wine club, where members can enjoy two or more bottles of fine wines every month, as well as take seasonal trips to local vineyards with Dan, “the wine guru,” leading the popular tours.

There are plans to bring back boat cruises, as well. New last year, Furlong’s offered a two-hour river cruise, setting out on the St. Croix from Stillwater. It is a beer- and wine-tasting event, with dinner included.

“On the cruises, we come to you, so when you’re sitting down we come and pour you the wine. It’s not where you’re walking around the boat trying different stations. You’re actually enjoying the trip on the boat,” Terry says.

Furlong’s commitment to providing great customer service hasn’t wavered over the years. It’s the brothers’ passion for great service that keeps people coming back year after year and from generation to generation.

Whether you’re looking to fill a large order for a dinner party or simply want a six-pack to take on your fishing boat for the afternoon, Furlong’s knowledgeable staff will help you find what you’re looking for.

The Furlongs’ roots in the area go back to the 1930s -- the land where the store is located on Highway 120 was once their grandparents’ family farm.

Terry and Dan have continued their grandfather’s affinity for giving back to the local community. Over the years, the Furlongs have taken part in numerous civic events and have donated thousands of dollars toward community betterment projects in both Oakdale and North St. Paul. Terry also serves as a North St. Paul City Council member.

“Our roots have been here a long time,” Terry says. “We’re proud to be a part of this community, and to be involved with it is something we’ve always seen as important.”
