Towering bluffs rim the breathtaking Spearfish Canyon, which was carved out by Spearfish Creek and the small mountain streams that flow into it in the northwestern side of the Black Hills.
Devils Tower, a geological oddity, can be seen from miles away. The unearthly-looking monolith rises 1,267 feet above the Belle Fouche River valley and was the country’s first national monument.

Ramsey County Sheriff Jack Serier, left, honored several deputies at a July 19 event, commending them for their “successful resolution” of a mental health crisis in Shoreview last Feburary involving a man with a knife. Tim Schwab and Maplewood Officer Brian Tauzell, were all recognized at the ceremony, where Serier applauded them, and deputy Marilyn Hedstrom who couldn’t make it to the event, for their determination to help the man, rather than turning to lethal force, despite endangering their lives.

In February, more than a half dozen police squad cars responded to a home in Shoreview after police received a report of a potential active shooter.
Nick Swaggert from Better Futures Minnesota points out elements of a home on South McCarrons Boulevard in Roseville that will be salvaged for resale. The organization, a nonprofit that employs and supports men who have been in the prison system, was hired to deconstruct the home, which was purchased by Roseville last year. Once the home comes all the way down, another nonprofit will build a new home on the site that will house an at-risk family or military veteran.
