Lake Elmo neighborhood parks meetings scheduled

Elected officials will be bringing local government to the people in four different neighborhoods on four separate days this summer. The city of Lake Elmo has scheduled a series of outdoor community meetings at city parks in June and July. All community meetings will take place on Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The dates and locations are as follows:  June 12, Carriage Station Park, Stillwater Boulevard and 50th Street; June 26, Reid Park, 11430 30th Street; July 10, Pebble Park, 8160 Lake Jane Trail; July 24, Stonegate Park, 750 Jasmine Ave.

The meetings are an opportunity for residents to get involved with local government and find out what city plans or programs are in place or being considered.
“It’s getting increasingly difficult to get people to come to our meetings, so we are going to take the government to the people,” city administrator Dean Zuleger said.
Zuleger said sometimes broader citizen engagement gets drown out by one or two voices.
“The big reason we are doing this is because we want to hear from more people.”

By hosting meetings in a relaxed park setting, city officials hope to attract a diverse crowd of Lake Elmo residents, from young families to senior citizens.
“What we are doing is offering a chance for residents to come down to the parks and meet their elected officials and some of the staff, and provide their perspective on park use and any other suggestions they may have on any number of items associated with the city,” mayor Mike Pearson said.

Communications coordinator Alyssa MacLeod said there will be an introduction of city officials and staff members, followed by a summary of current development plans and the city’s recent community survey. Elected officials will touch on a number of topics prior to making themselves available to field questions and hear comments.

The outdoor meetings will take place in a picnic-like setting with light refreshments and entertainment provided for kids.

Zuleger said a fifth meeting is likely to be scheduled sometime in September at Lions Park.
