Defense is key for SAVHS volleyball

Success for the St. Anthony Village High School volleyball team starts with its defense. The Huskies plan on making things tough on opposing offenses this fall.

"Our modus operandi will be to be a scrappy, defensive-minded squad that forces our opponents to work for every point while being assertive on offense," said third-year St. Anthony head coach Eric Trygstad.

Trygstad has an optimistic view of the upcoming season thanks to four returning letterwinners.

Among those returning players are senior captains Mindy Froehle and Sophie Stumpf. Froehle’s strength is serve receive while Stumpf led the team in digs and served at a 95 percent clip last season.

Senior setter Kayla Egle and senior outside hitter Sammy Skwarek are also back for one more season. Skwarek led the team in kills and was second in digs in 2014 while Egle served at 97 percent with 14 aces, dished out 145 set assists and was second on the team in blocks.

Newcomers who should contribute this fall include juniors Nathalie Douer, Bonnie Zeller, Alexa Beguhl, Shannon Dean and Sammi Siggelkow.

"Our goal is to improve upon our skills and abilities every day," said Trygstad. "A few team-result goals are to improve upon our record from last season, perform better at tourneys and to advance in sections."

St. Anthony went 8-15 overall and 4-5 in the Tri-Metro Conference (sixth place) in 2014. The Tri-Metro also features at least a couple of teams with serious state-tournament aspirations.

"It makes every match a fun one," said Trygstad.
