Young, aggressive Titans looking to improve chances this season

The Tartan 2015 volleyball squad will "be a young, but very eager team," stated head coach Josh Mattison just before the start of the 2015 season.

"The team will have many underclassmen in key roles on our varsity this year. We will be a big and aggressive squad."

Mattison went on to explain, "Our ball control will be the place where we will concentrate our early efforts in order to gain the confidence we need. We will not be looking at wins and losses to determine our early success. We will work hard on getting our players up to speed and gain varsity experience."

The Tartan varsity will have only one starter back to bolster the offense this season.

Leading Tartan will be a trio of captains — juniors Hailey Kissner and Alana St. Cyr, and sophomore Marisa Gomez-John.

Kissner and Gomez-John will work at an outside-hitter position. St. Cyr will direct the Titans from the setter slot.

Bolstering the Titans will be two outside hitters, junior Karly Bihner and eight-grader Alexandra Lyle, along with sophomore Megan LeMay, who will fit in the middle-hitter position.

Mattison glanced at the Metro East Conference and selected perennial powers North and Hill-Murray, along with Simley, as the most likely to end on the top of the standings come October and the end of the regular season.

Working as Tartan assistant volleyball coaches this season will be Emily Anderson, Kristen Fuerst, Scott Mason and Amy Mousel.

The Titans already are into the 2015 season, having dropped a 3-0 decision to the Stillwater Ponies. They played Lakeville South Sept. 1 and Eagan Sept. 3 on the road.

The remaining Tartan volleyball schedule is: Sept. 10 Henry Sibley at Tartan; Sept. 15 at South St. Paul; Sept. 17 Hastings at Tartan; Sept. 24 North at Tartan; Sept. 26, 9 a.m. at Chanhassen Invitational; Sept. 29 at Simley; Oct. 1 Mahtomedi at Tartan; Oct. 10, 8:30 a.m. at Cannon Falls Invitational; Oct 13 at North, and Oct. 22 at Hill-Murray.

Games begin at 7 p.m., unless otherwise noted.

The Section 4 AAA tournament playoffs will begin Oct. 27 at the site of the team with the highest seed.
