Polars alone in first in MEC volleyball standings

A pair of unbeatens met last week in a Metro East Conference volleyball showdown and the match did not disappoint. North downed Hill-Murray in five games to take sole possession of first place in the conference standings.

The victory pushed North’s MEC record to 3-0 and it holds a one-game lead over Hill-Murray and Tartan.

North plays at Tartan on Oct. 5 and at Hill-Murray on Oct. 11.

The Polars needed a big comeback against the Pioneers, the defending MEC champions, in their match on Sept. 20. Hill-Murray won the first two sets by identical 25-23 scores.

Something happened between games two and three, however, and both teams looked much different. North started game three much stronger than it had in the first two games as senior Rachel Tschida gave the Polars their first two points on kills. The second kill started North on a four-point run and the rout was on.

Hill-Murray was unable to stop the bleeding and eventually North went on a nine-point run to open up 16-3 lead. From there, the rest of the set was academic and North won 25-13.

Game four was more of the same as North used a seven-point run to go from being tied at 4-4 tie to holding an 11-4 lead. The Polars won game four 25-7 to set up a first-to-15 fifth set.

Yet another fast start pushed North out to a 6-1 lead and a seven-point run all but sealed it. The Polars won game five 15-6.

North, which was ranked ninth in last week’s Class AAA coaches poll, followed up the Hill-Murray victory with a trip to fifth-ranked Wayzata on Sept. 22. That match also went five games with Wayzata rallying from a 2-0 hole to win 19-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-13.

It’s a quiet week for North with only one match on the schedule. The Polars traveled to Hastings on Sept. 27. Next week, North hosts 10th-ranked Blaine on Oct. 4 before squaring off with Tartan on Oct. 5.

Hill-Murray hosted Tartan on Sept. 27 and South St. Paul on Sept. 29.

Tartan

The Titans began last week tied for first but dropped into a second-place tie with Hill-Murray after losing in four games to Simley on Sept. 22. Two days earlier, Tartan ventured out of MEC play and lost 3-0 to Centennial.

This week, Tartan visited Hill-Murray on Sept. 27 and hosts Mahtomedi on Sept. 29.
