Mendota Heights public meeting

Representatives from the Minnesota Department of Transportation will attend an upcoming Mendota Heights City Council workshop to discuss recent changes made to Dodd Road, at its intersections with Pagel Road, Decorah and Wagon Wheel Trail. The workshop will be held from 6 to 6:50 p.m., on Jan. 2 in council chambers, 1101 Victoria Curve. 

 

Smartphone basics

Discover options for providing better smartphone security on your iPhone or Android. Learn which basic security settings are right for you and how to configure them. Topics include PINs and password managers, apps and backups, WiFi and VPNs, remote wipe, encryption, and smartphone scams. Presented by Twin Cities Media Alliance and funded by MELSA, this will run from 6 to 8 p.m., Jan. 7, at the South St. Paul Library, 106 Third Ave. N. Registration is required. MNSure

From 4 to 6 p.m., Jan. 3, meet with a Certified Application Counselor to help you set up an account with MNsure — the one-stop health insurance marketplace where Minnesotans can compare plans and choose from a variety of health insurance options. Registration is requested; walk-ins are okay as time and space allow. This will take place at the West St. Paul Library, 199 Wentworth Ave. E. Call 651-554-6800 for more information. 

 

O.W.L.S

Nature is a powerful inspiration for music, art, poetry, books, movies and quilts. On Jan. 8, Jeannette Root, past president of the Minnesota Quilters and co-founder of Dakota County Star Quilters, will share quilting stories, quilts and quilt designs inspired by nature. Pre-registration is required by Jan. 4. The cost is $15 for both the program and lunch or $5 for just the program. Taking place at Dodge Nature Center’s Farm Education Entrance 3, 1701 Charlton St., West St. Paul, the program will go from 11 a.m. to noon, with lunch following. Jim Berner, entertainer

Register by Jan. 8 to hear Jim Berner play and sing hits from the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s.  This performance will take place Jan. 16 from 1 to 2 p.m., at Thompson Park Activity Center, 1200 Stassen Lane, West St. Paul. The cost is $7, which includes dessert. Call 651-403-8300 to register.

 

Helping Students Succeed Workshop on Special Education Services 

Helping Students Succeed is a free, two-hour workshop that provides information to parents of school-age children about special education services, the evaluation process, Individualized Education Programs (IEP), 504 plans, accommodations and modifications. The workshop, sponsored by NAMI Minnesota (National Alliance on Mental Illness) will be held in West St. Paul on Jan. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Wentworth Library, 199 Wentworth Ave. E., in the large meeting room.  To register, please contact NAMI at 651-645-2948 or go to “classes” at namimn.org.

 

Balance and Brains

A one-hour class designed for the unique needs of older adults desiring to remain active, agile, and mentally sharp.  Each class will consist of: strength training, cardiovascular exercise, balance and brain training games, as well as exercises to improve balance, strength, memory, reasoning, and problem solving skills.  Please bring your own exercise mat or towel or choose to use a chair.  Space is limited so register early by calling 651-403-8300. Registration is required. There are two sessions: Jan. 11 through Feb. 22 or March 1 through April 26. The first session costs $49 and the second will cost $56. There is no class March 29. Classes will take place at Thompson Park Activity Center, 120 Stassen Lane, West St. Paul.

 

Team Jigsaw Puzzle Challenge

Create a team of up to four friends or family to see who can complete a 500-piece puzzle first. Adults and teens, grades sixth through 12, are invited to attend. Prize awarded to the winning team. One registration per team is required. This will run from 1 to 3 p.m., at the South St. Paul Library, 106 Third Ave. N, Jan. 12. Call 651-554-3240 for more information.

 

Snowshoe hike

Join Mendota Heights Parks and Recreation at Dodge Nature Center, 365 Marie Ave. W., West St. Paul, for a snowshoe/hike with a naturalist. Participants are welcome to hike or snowshoe on the trails while learning more about nature. Free snowshoe rentals are available, but children must be 10 years old to rent the snowshoes. Space is limited. If there is enough interest, another session may be scheduled. The cost is $7 per participant. The hike will take place Jan. 12 from 1 to 2 p.m.
Program will run regardless of the temperature and weather. Snowshoeing will only happen if there is at least 6 inches of snow on the trails. If there is not enough snow, everyone will hike. To register, visit www.facebook.com/events/2038254846466481.
