Friends of Swede Hollow winter photo contest

Enter for a chance to win some prizes and neighborhood bragging rights by entering your favorite photos you’ve taken at Swede Hollow Park. The photos much have been taken in the park between Dec. 21, 2018 and March 20, 2019. Email your photo, in .jpg format, to karindupaul@comcast.net on or before March 23 to be considered. Please put “FOSH Winter Photo Contest” in the subject line of the email and include your contact information in the email. Judging will be done by the East Side Arts Council. The Friends of Swede Hollow ask that contest participants allow their photograph to be printed and sold as a fundraiser for the Friends of Swede Hollow during the annual Art in the Hollow event in the park on June 1. Prizes will be award to the top three photos and include a $75, $50, and $25 Visa gift cards. 

Elder Cafe

Join East Side Elders for its monthly lunch and social hour, this month on March 14, noon to 2 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, 463 Maria Ave. During this month’s cafe, participants can learn about their Somali neighbors with a guest presenter from the Somali Museum of Minnesota. Visitors will also get to experience the flavors and foods of traditional Somali cuisine from the owners of Karibu, the East Side’s newest Somali cafe. Please consider bringing a donation of non-perishable food or personal care items to the event. East Side Elders is collecting items for their Blue Bag program in which the organization delivers supplemental groceries to seniors in the community. Alcoholism and addiction resources

The East Side YMCA, 875 Arcade St., will hold a presentation on Tuesday, March 19, 5:30 to 7 p.m., in the Eastside Conference Room about alcoholism and addiction resources. The presentation features Brian Rose from the Alliance Wellness Center. Light refreshments will be available. The event is open to member and non-members with a photo ID. St. Paul trash lawsuit discussion

Neighbors are invited to stop by the Hayden Heights Library, 1456 White Bear Avenue on Saturday, March 30 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for an information session and discussion about the lawsuit against the city regarding the new trash collection system. Anyone is welcome to attend.

 

East Side Lions annual fish fry

The East Side Lions’ annual fish fry returns on Friday, March 8, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the American Legion 577, 1129 Arcade St. The cost is $12 for adults, $6 for children (10 years and under) for all you can eat, while supplies last. The event will also include a silent auctions, desserts and a 50-50 raffle. For questions or to make a donation, contact Rebecca Nelson at 651-442-5008.

 

East Side Elders fundraiser

Join East Side Elders for a benefit fundraiser on March 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Flat Earth Brewing Company, 688 Minnehaha Ave. E. The event will include food trucks, a raffle for gift cards to local businesses, speakers and more. Visitors will also get a chance to meet the creators of the book, “Walk on the East Side” and to purchase a copy of the book. Funds raised  will help support programming and services that East Side Elders provides to help keep local seniors in their homes. Prom dress sale

Stop by the Hazel Park Recreation Center on Saturday, March 9, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to find the perfect prom dress. No dress will be over $10, but a high school ID will be required for purchase. All proceeds from the sale will benefit youth programming and sports at Hazel Park Recreation Center. If you have a gently used dress, shoes or accessories that you would like to donate, please contact the center by calling 651-501-6350. The center is located at 945 N. Hazel St.
