NEWSBRIEF: Local students excel in national competitions

In the month of May, students from Mounds View High School successfully competed in two national competitions in economics and personal finance: the National Personal Finance Challenge in Lincoln, Nebraska, and the National Economics Challenge in New York City. The students, several of whom are interested in pursuing undergraduate studies in related fields, represented Minnesota after winning statewide competitions against other high school students.

Participants in the National Personal Finance Challenge, sponsored by VOYA Financial, competed to demonstrate their knowledge of budgeting, savings and investments, and personal finance planning in a series of written exams and group presentations.

Participants in the National Economics Challenge, a program first developed in Duluth in 1987, were asked to describe and explain economic phenomena that affect trade, individual households and national governments, among other topics. The Minnesota team excelled in analytical skills and presentations, securing second place in the Adam Smith Division of the competition.
