Volunteers to build playground at Global Academy

Nearly 200 volunteers from UnitedHealthcare, Global Academy and the community will join national non-profit KaBOOM! from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, to transform an empty site into a kid-designed playground at Global Academy’s new campus, located at 3000 Fifth St. NW in New Brighton.

Global Academy is a free, public charter school moving from Columbia Heights into the former site of the United Theological Seminary. The soon-to-be playground is based on student drawings and will provide nearly 500 kids at the school with a safe place to play.

The build is part of UnitedHealthcare’s employee volunteer initiative, dedicated to decreasing hunger and obesity and increasing physical activity. It is the 29th build the company has done in partnership with KaBOOM!, a non-profit with a similar mission.

Community members who are interested in volunteering can contact the school at 763-404-8200. Gloves, goggles, breakfast and lunch will be provided.
