Humorous speech contest in Shoreview

Cummins Communicators is hosting a humorous speech contest on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m. at Cummins, Inc., 3850 Victoria St. N. in Shoreview. The contest is sponsored by nine area Toastmasters clubs in the north metro and is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. to allow people time to find the room and get seated.

While everyone is invited to come and watch, competitors will be from area Toastmasters clubs. Distinguished Toastmaster and area director Jim Peterson will host the evening’s humorous offerings. The co-host is Jackie Flaherty, area director of four local clubs.

Each speech will be five to seven minutes long and will be judged by a team of Toastmasters judges. The winners of the area competition will advance to the division competition held on Oct. 24 in Mounds View.

Toastmasters is a nonprofit that helps its members improve their leadership and communication skills by offering opportunities to speak, listen, evaluate and lead during weekly meetings.

It encourages visitors to attend the contest or any of its weekly meetings. There are several area clubs that meet at different times and on different days of the week, including in-house clubs at many businesses.

In the north metro there are Toastmasters clubs at Deluxe, Land O’Lakes, Boston Scientific, Polaris and Cummins, among others. Some clubs, like BAE Systems and Land O’Lakes, are open to employees and the general public.
